Braces or Clear Aligners – Which Orthodontic Appliance is best for you?

Braces

Braces are metal wires and bands that are attached to your teeth. Braces do not only straighten teeth for aesthetic reasons, but also for functional purposes such as improving how one breathes or chews.

Aligners

Aligners are custom-made clear trays that are designed to move your teeth. Small composite resin bumps are cemented to your teeth, which help the aligners grip to your teeth and move as planned.

Both treatment options have various advantages and disadvantages:

Braces Advantages
  • Compliance – as the braces are cemented to your teeth, naturally your teeth will move over time without you forgetting to wear them.
  • Variety – at Dental Cube Kellyville Ridge, we have many coloured bands for you to choose from.
Braces Disadvantages
  • Hygiene – overall it is more complex and challenging to maintain oral hygiene, especially brushing with braces as the brackets make it difficult for your toothbrush bristles to thoroughly brush all surfaces of your teeth.
  • Diet – especially in the early stages of braces, it may be sore to chew on hard food, as a result making it uncomfortable when eating.
  • Appearance – braces often are more visible than clear aligners because the metal brackets are cemented to your teeth.
Aligners Advantages
  • Hygiene – it is significantly easier to brush and maintain your oral hygiene with aligners as they are removable and thus allow for your toothbrush bristles to clean all surfaces of your teeth.
  • Diet –  your diet is not affected, because you have to remove your aligners when eating.
  • Appearance – aligners are clear and appear to look like your natural teeth, thus they are less noticeable.
Aligners Disadvantage
  • Compliance – as aligners are removable, it is easy to forget to put them in or lose them.
