But how would you know if it’s a dental emergency? What do you do to handle a dental emergency until your child gets to the dentist?
Is it a dental emergency?
If you are not sure what a dental emergency is, the following questions may help:
- Is the child bleeding from or in the mouth?
- Is the child in severe pain?
- Are there any avulsed teeth?
- Is there any swelling in the mouth?
- Is there any inflammation on the gums?
Read on to learn more about the most common children’s dental emergencies and how to deal with them at home.
Rinse your child’s mouth with lukewarm saltwater. This helps relieve pain and tenderness. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and twinges.
Clear the mouth of food particles. Do not give aspirin to your child. This can only cause additional complication. See your dentist as soon as possible.
Broken, chipped or cracked tooth
Rinse your child’s mouth with lukewarm saltwater and apply an ice pack to his/her face, against the affected area. Go to your Kellyville Ridge dentist right away.
Dislodged or knocked-out tooth
If your child’s tooth becomes loose because of trauma, inform your Kellyville Ridge dentist immediately.
Rinse your child’s mouth with lukewarm saltwater while waiting to see your dentist. Do not try to reinsert a temporary tooth to its socket. It may damage the developing tooth under the gums.
Bitten Lip or Tongue
Wipe the affected area with clean, wet gauze and apply a cold compress on the face to reduce the swelling.
If bleeding occurs, apply light pressure on the affected area for 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops.
